Australian storyteller Jenni Cargill-Strong has just won an award in the U.S. for her children's CD
'The Mermaid's Shoes'. Jenni's CD won Honours in the 'Recorded Stories' category of the 2008 Storytelling World Awards. All the other categories are for published books and hundreds of entries are sent from all
around the world. Jenni's first CD "Wonder Tales of Earth and Sea" won an award from the
National Library of Australia back in 1999, but even though the Audiobooks
market is growing rapidly, there were no competitions in Australia for Jenni
to enter 'The Mermaid's Shoes' into, which drove Jenni to look for a competition overseas. 
 
"I'm particularly thrilled for 'Mermaid's Shoes' to be recognised in the US, because storytelling over there is
absolutely huge." said Jenni. "There are hundreds and
hundreds of professional storytellers and many have CD's, so the competition is quite tough. In the US, some
storytelling festivals are far bigger than Woodford Folk Festival- with up
to 2000 people in one tent listening to one storyteller! However it would be
great to see more recognition in Australia for storytelling CD's. They provide a  great alternative to TV, DVD's and
computer games and stimulate the imagination of listeners. They are also fantastic on long car trips, which I can vouch for myself with my two kids!"

The CD features six traditional stories plus two original songs. The title track of the CD is about the mermaid of Byron Bay. She decides to trade in her tail for human legs after watching a full moon party on the beach. People are dancing gracefully and wildly by a flickering bonfire to the sound of funky drum rythmns. "It was Byron Bay locals who helped make this CD a world class award-winning recording," said Jenni. "So thanks to Michael Bates at Nomad Digital and also to musicians Rochelle Wright and Pete Haddock, who arranged and played the accompaniment to my songs."
