GREAT NEWS ABOUT OUR NEW CERTIFICATION
SKAL – our former certification body has changed its name and broadened its appeal by merging with Controlled Union. This is a development that we are very excited about. We consider it to be the highest certification we can possibly offer our customers which means its great news for your store too. We love that you already proudly carry the Nature’s Child Brand but now you can be surer than ever of the high standard that our company has always striven to hold regarding the truth and integrity of certification of our products.
Some organic baby products are certified but only for their fabric. With our new GOTS certification, its not just the fabric that is certified, but also the harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labelling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.
Our new GOTS standard for NATURES CHILD ORGANIC BABY ESSENTIALS covers the production, processing, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, exportation, importation and distribution of all natural fibres. The final products may include, but are not limited to fibre products, yarns, fabrics and clothes. These are compulsory criteria for our certification.
This means that every processing step must meet certain criteria. The criteria for the production process are laid down in the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS). They encompass every process-step of textile production (spinning, weaving, washing, etc) and for every step it is laid down which processing aids may (not) be used, in order to gain as much environmental profit as possible.
FAIR TRADE is also a fundamental part of our certification. The Social and Fair Trade Certificate guarantees that disadvantaged producers in the developing world in the entire supply chain get a better deal by covering the producers’ cost of sustainable production and establishing a Fairtrade Premium which is invested in social, economic or environmental improvement projects.
Nature’s Child GOTS certification is one of the highest standards of international organic certification.
Why is Fair Trade important? Take the article I recently read by a BBC journalist about cotton harvesting in Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is the 2nd largest exporter of cotton in the world. I was shocked to learn that the Uzbek government closes schools from September to November--so that children can harvest the cotton. Human rights groups estimate some 450,000 children are working in the cotton fields of Uzbekistan during every harvest.
