KID SAFE CHEMICALS ACT
Last month, When the Canadian government banned the use of BPA in plastic, it created a media frenzy here in Australia. Our own retail store, like yours no doubt, was inundated with calls, orders and lots and lots of questions. The media stories focused on the questionable safety of plastic baby bottles. Well, we usually sell about 20 glass bottles a week, but after A Current Affair aired the story on plastic baby bottles, we sold 1000 in 2 weeks and we all worked double shifts to deal with the frenzy. It was amazing. Apart from the excitement of all the orders, it was great to talk to customers that have never bought eco-friendly products before and it gave us access to a whole new audience. Thanks to a Current Affair for airing that story!
As a store owner, you don't need to wait for a Current Affair. You have access to some great products already, tell your customers all about them! Be proactive! Don't wait for them to come to you.
Here is a tip on the latest news to share with your customers.
The Kid-Safe Chemicals Act was introduced last week in the USA Congress aimed at protecting families and to force chemical companies to prove chemicals are safe before they use them. In the past 30 years, the American EPA has evaluated the safety of just 200 out of 80,000 chemicals, and banned only five. But at least they have banned 5! Australia tends to follow countries like the USA in these areas so it's important that we look to what is happening in the USA for news.
Since retailers like us have known for years that many chemicals used to make childrens toys are not safe, I don't know whether to be gob smacked or just happy that governments are finally stepping up to regulating some of these important health issues that have been marginalised as "eco-issues" for so long now.
For a long time, eco-friendly stores have been seen as a source of information. This information is your most powerful marketing tool. To increase sales, keep up to date with news like last weeks USA Congress Act and let your customers know! Then, let them know what products you offer as a solution.
Soft vinyl baby toys and soothers (also known as dummies) are likely to contain phthalates, a chemical commonly used in PVC plastics, solvents, and synthetic fragrances.
Phthalates are linked to reproductive problems, allergies, and asthma. Last week the Sunday papers ran a story warning parents to check the toys and soothers that they used for their babies.
So, since many of you are selling our soothers now, how about looking for these articles, cutting them out and displaying them on your website and in your store?
Just an idea! |
