The Worlds First 100% biodegradable disposable nappy

All your questions answered!

Safeties Nappy "This product is my life's work. It is a culmination of my love for the environment, my love for children and my love of design and I am so excited that ‘she' has finally been delivered. Any mother would understand my relief as the gestation period for this ‘baby' has been six years." Says Charishma Seneviratne, the WA mother and scientist who created the nappy.

What is Safeties Nature Nappy?
Created using a unique fibre technology, Safeties is a fabric-based nappy (not paper-based). This unique approach is what makes this disposable nappy 100% biodegradable. The method of construction and overall thread count of each Safeties Nature Nappy makes them feather-soft and breathable against your baby's skin. Safeties are also highly absorbent, has a comfortable fit allowing unrestricted movement, minimizing chafing against your baby's delicate skin.

Each nappy also comes with its own 100% biodegradable disposal nappy bag. It is important that you do not place our nappies in a regular plastic bag, as this will reduce our nappy's ability to biodegrade.

We advise users that before putting the soiled nappy into the 100% biodegradable disposable bag provided pull off the side nappy tabs to accelerate the biodegradable process. Tabs and elastic will break down but take a little longer than the rest of the nappy.

If you have any feedback about the nappy once you try it, please let us know. Like all brands, some of you will love it and some will have challenges, we would like to hear about both! Mainstream brands have had 40 years to perfect their design, we have had a few weeks! So please keep the communication flowing with us so we can improve the nappy where necessary.

Nappy Features

Fabric-based breathability
Safeties 100% biodegradable disposable nappy has a watertight, biodegradable coversheet that also ‘breathes' resulting in a more comfortable, airy and dryer nappy. This means hot air cannot be trapped inside the nappy where it can cause an unhealthy rise in body temperature. Due to its fabric-based composition, the nappy is extremely soft and lightweight.

Totally dry without dehydrating
The super-absorbent, unbleached viscose fluff core has been scientifically tested for its ability to hold moisture.

Innovative leak-proof material
Safeties 100% biodegradable disposable nappy has an outstanding leak-prevention design, to give mothers total peace-of-mind and babies total comfort. The viscose fluff core together with the starch draws and holds moisture instantly for leak-proof reliability. Special side leak guards run through the nappy and fit gently around your baby's leg, leaving your baby secure and comfortable. The water proofing material contained in the nappy is certified by AIB-VINCOTTE International.

Fastening System
The hook and loop elastic fastening system on the Safeties 100% biodegradable disposable nappy ensures a snug fit.

Health Benefits
Safeties 100% biodegradable disposable nappy is fabric-based and does not contain absorption chemicals. We also do not use perfumes. Our absorption process is natural ensuring liquid is drawn away from your baby's skin thereby reducing the risk of nappy rash.

We recommend parents change their baby's nappy at least every 3 to 6 hours, depending on sleeping/feeding patterns.

After a baby emerges from the protective warmth of its mother's womb, usually the first item of clothing they will wear is a nappy. Particularly during this important first stage of life, a paper-based nappy, which contains chemicals, can shock the baby's vulnerable system.

In choosing the raw materials for the Safeties 100% biodegradable disposable nappy we have focused on your baby's comfort and health. We wanted to recreate that same feeling of warmth and security as experienced in a mother's womb. The materials used in the nappy also adhere to current standards for comfort, hygiene and safety of baby clothing and the organic super absorbent polymer is certified for absorbency and safety.

Environmental Benefits
The impact of disposable nappies on the environment is significant. Australians use around 800 million nappies per year. Australians use Two thousand disposables and pull-ups every two minutes. Consequently, these products are the third most common item found in landfill.

The Safeties Nature Nappy is a 100% biodegradable disposable nappy that breaks down within six to eight months, depending on soil conditions.

In choosing the raw materials the company has focused on sustainability and environmental impact; at the same time, the important respective materials have been tested by various international organisations and obtained:
  • The Certificate for use of the ‘OK COMPOST' conformity mark by AIB Vincotte International
  • Granted the AFSI seal of approval for sustainable agriculture
  • Certified by the Organic Materials Accreditation Society in 2006

Being a new nappy, it may not look or feel like any other disposable you have experienced before. Here are a few facts that may answer your questions.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Where can I buy your nappies?
Safeties are available from IGA stores in Western Australia. If you live in NSW, QLD, ACT, VIC, TAS and would like to purchase Safeties Nature Nappy please contact sales@natureschild.com.au or call 02 – 6685 6840 for your nearest stockist. We are negotiating with other locations throughout the world and will post these on the web as soon as they have been confirmed.

Are Safeties more expensive than other nappies?

Safeties Nature Nappy will be priced competitively with other leading eco-disposable nappies currently on the market. Get together with friends to purchase by the carton for home delivery.

Why does the inside of the nappy turn brown when the nappy is wet?

Safeties Nature Nappy has an unbleached absorbent core, which is 100% natural, and it turns a darker shade of brown when wet.

I am using a nappy which is partially biodegradable, isn't this okay?

It is great that companies before us have made such great leaps for the environmental, but these nappies still take many years to break down, as there is non-biodegradable plastic protection in their nappy covers.

But I've been using a biodegradable nappy for years?

Be sure to check the details of what you have been currently using, some companies have been misleading or are only partially biodegradable. Safeties is the first 100% biodegradable disposable nappy.

I am concerned that the Safeties Nature Nappy is not absorbing moisture because it does not seem to swell like normal disposable nappies when soiled.

Regular disposable nappies use a chemical process to absorb moisture, which makes them expand significantly. Our nappies absorb moisture through a natural process and as a result do not expand to the same degree. Our nappy still absorbs moisture at the same rate and your baby remains dry and protected. Safeties Nature Nappies are as absorbent as the leading brands of disposable nappies on the market; however, when soiled Safeties do not swell at the same rate as these brands.

What is Safeties made from?
Safeties are made from 95% natural materials. The base material is viscose felted (patented). Natural polymer synthetically grafted to natural starch and fluff makes up the absorbent core. We also use semi syntactic polymers; these substances comply with ASTMD standards, an internationally tested and recognised standard of biodegradation.

What makes the nappy absorbent?

Unlike conventional brands that use chemicals to draw moisture away from babies' delicate bodies, the nappy uses a grafted polymer to natural starch technology that ensures liquid is naturally and quickly drawn away from the skin, thereby reducing the risk of nappy rash and more serious conditions that result from traditional absorption methods.

Is the packaging biodegradable?
Unfortunately at this stage our packaging is not biodegradable, but it is recyclable. As the product is 100% biodegradable we want to ensure that it does not start breaking down before it is in the ground. We are however in the process of investigating other options for biodegradable packaging.

Is the nappy bleached?

We use an oxygen bleaching process to make Safeties white. This is a safer and more environmentally friendly method of bleaching. We have done this because our research suggests parents prefer to use a white nappy on their children. If however you would prefer to have a more natural coloured nappy please let us know. If there is enough interest, we will investigate producing an alternative. It is important to note however that as we are using natural fibres - to comply with health standards - a partial bleaching process must take place to remove any specs or germs that may exist in these materials.

Safeties Nappies

When the nappy is soiled it seems to be cold. I am concerned that the nappy could be leaking. Could this be the case?

Safeties may feel cool when it is soiled, but this does not mean it is leaking. In fact if you feel your baby's skin you will notice it is as dry as any other nappy. The cool feeling is indicative that a natural method of absorption is occurring in the nappy.

A unique cooling system has been incorporated into Safeties, which prevents your child from over heating. Safeties have been specially designed to ensure your baby remains dry, whilst their body temperature remains constant. The second outer layer is a 100% water proof (bio film), which is also breathable. This layer allows air to reach your baby' skin, which assists in the prevention of nappy rash. The circulation of air also allows babies' vital organs to remain cool, preventing dehydration of your baby's natural body moisture.

In traditional nappies air gets trapped in the plastic bindings and combined with the chemical reaction that occurs as a result of the absorption process, the nappy heats up and ultimately can dehydrate your child. Significant research has suggested that if a baby's reproductive organs are exposed to long term over heating they may have an increased chance of developing fertility problems in adulthood.

It is important to distinguish between the feeling of hot and dry and cool and damp. A baby should be warm from its own heat or as a result of a natural breathable fibre, not from a chemical reaction.

Safeties has been designed as a result of university level research and development, with a particular emphasis on health. This nappy allows for air circulation and is free of toxic chemicals. Both these features will ensure your baby does not become dehydrated or suffer from more serious health conditions that have been linked with conventional absorption methods. The nappy also has been designed to assist in the prevention of nappy rash!

Is the fabric petroleum based?
Unlike most other disposable nappies our nappy fabric is not petroleum based. You can test this by ripping our nappy easily. This is because plastic based on natural plant polymers derived from wheat and corn starch, have molecules that are readily attached and broken down by microbes, making them biodegradable.

Happy Safeties BabyAre there any chemicals in the nappy?
We do not add chemicals for absorption or perfumes to our nappy. However, when natural fibres are turned into fabric they all undergo a certain process for purification. So there are traces of chemicals in our nappy, but no more than any other natural fiber that has been turned into purified material.

Can I compost the nappies?
Unfortunately it is not legal to compost soiled nappies in Australia, as there are health implications associated with burying this type of waste in the garden. However, if you would like to see how these nappies break down, you can always dispose of an unsoiled nappy in your compost. To speed up the biodegrading process, we recommend that you remove the small side tabs before you place the nappies in a compost bin or in the soil. Oxygen and moisture content in compost and methane gas in landfill assist in the decomposition process of the nappy.

Should I remove the tabs from the nappy when I throw the nappy away?
Safeties will breakdown significantly faster if you remove the tabs before disposing of the nappy. Fastenings and trimmings are considered, by Australian standards, as accessories to a product. The tabs make up less than 1% of the product. These tabs are still biodegradable; however they will take longer to break down than the body of the nappy. Please remember to place the soiled nappies in the biodegradable disposable bags provided before you throw the nappy away.

What does "biodegradable" mean?
The term biodegradable means that a substance is able to be broken down into a simpler substance by the activities of a living organism; therefore it is unlikely to persist in the environment. There are many different standards to measure biodegradability; each country has its own. The requirements range from 60%-90% decomposition of the product in 60 -180 days of it being placed in landfill.

HISTORY OF SAFETIES 100% biodegradable disposable nappy

5 June 2007

World's First
100% Biodegradable Disposable Nappy
Launches July 1 2007 on East Coast of Australia

Nature's Child are proud to announce their latest planet saving product.

This is an Australian Invention, 9 years in the making.

"This is a major breakthrough for the planet, for parents and for our babies" says Jannine Barron, owner and creator of Australia's First Organic Baby Company.

"People have asked for a guilt free disposable nappy for a long time. Well, here it is and its competitively priced so its affordable for everyone"

Safeties is the brain child of Charishma Seneviratne from Western Australia, a mother and Fibre Technologist who was driven to find a solution to the environmental issue of nappies in landfill. It is estimated that traditional disposables can take between 300-500 years to decompose. Australians use around 800 million nappies per year, which equates to about two thousand disposable nappies and pull-ups every two minutes.

The product has been scientifically tested and in normal conditions breaks down completely in less than six months. However, due to the arid conditions of Australian landfill, it is estimated that Safeties will completely break down in these dryer conditions within 6-8 months, depending on soil conditions. Included in each pack of nappies are 100% biodegradable disposal bags, which the nappies must be placed in when, disposed of.

"The nappy is like any other conventional disposable and will be priced competitively with the leading brands; however, unlike our competitors whose nappies are paper based, Safeties is fabric based, making it incredibly soft," Seneviratne says.

Safeties Nature Nappy also has significant health benefits.

Safeties are as absorbent as the leading brands, however, when a nappy is soiled; the odour is completely different from other brands. "Chemicals react with bodies. When you wear a synthetic shirt on a hot day it can smell," Seneviratne explains.

The nappies' unique cuff system and flexible design also ensures babies are less irritated and restricted when wearing the nappy.

"This product is my life's work.

"I met Charishma, the creator of the nappy in January in Perth early this year, our common love for nappies, for babies and the planet meant our companies were a perfect match" - " Nature's Child is very proud to be distributing this breakthrough product" says owner Jannine Barron

Nature's Child is Australia's First Organic Baby store created by Mum - Jannine Barron in July 2000. "We started Nature's Child before the word organics was ever trendy. We struggled back then to get parents to listen to us, but now they see the huge financial savings, as well as health and environmental savings"

Safeties Nature Nappy, the world's first 100% biodegradable disposable nappy has been available on the East Coast of Australia since July 1 2007.

Letters to our Customers

Hi Lucinda,

Thank you for your inquiry.

With regards to bio-degration: we have obtained EU and American standards for bio degration on 95% of our raw materials used. The natural fibres used are cellulose and the elastic have been tested and reports form a highly accepted University, conducted by a professor is part of our work in connection with our claim of bio degradability. With the tabs and the landing zone of the nappy as we have mentioned that it will take longer but they all bio degrade. These come under semi synthetic polymers.

The term bio degradability means that a substance is able to be broken down into simpler substances by the activities of living organisms, and there fore is unlikely to persist in the environment. There are many different standards used to measure biodegradability, with each country having its own. The requirement range from 90 percent to 60 percent decomposition of the product within 60 – 180 days of being placed in a standard composting environment. We have also had our own tests done and our claim of bio degradability has been proved beyond the standard requirement. While we also keep developing our product in every batch, which you will be able to experience in the short term if you do happen to purchase Safeties nature Nappy.

The Safeties nature nappy consists 95% of natural materials in the form of back sheet, absorbent core, and the liquid impervious layer along side with the semi polymers that are derived from cellulose and then combined to molecules that are short and loosely bonded together, to be broken apart and assimilated by decomposer organisms.

We at Senevens strive to reduce Global warming by reducing the impact on land fill and to assure a comfortable product next to baby's skin that is vulnerable.

We at Senevens and I my self as the Inventor, believe in solving and addressing an issue in hope of making a better and a safer planet for the future of this world "OUR CHILDREN" and congratulate every one's effort in doing so and do not consider any other company as a competitor in this field, but only consider them as supporters trying to achieve one mission. "SAVE OUR PLANET".

I invite you to visit our web site for regular updated information and thank you again for your interest.

Kind regards,

Charishma
